I went to a Kawanabe Kyosai exhibit in Tokyo early this year so I’ve become really enamored with his stuff. He’s late Edo period, so some of it almost seems modern, but he may be my favourite artist.
And Utagawa Kuniyoshi in particular did a bunch, but is probably best known for this.
Going back even further there’s Toriyama Sekien too. A bit more primitive compared to the guys above who were from the late Edo / early Meiji period, but a great look at early yokai art nonetheless.
Matt Alt and Hiroko Yoda did a great book that annotates Sekien’s yokai art. It gives you solid insight in to how many of the stories around them became ‘solidified’ for lack of a better term. http://amzn.to/2sgfB1g
